April 23, 2010 – Cweorth

Cweorth

Cweorth is the letter Q

There is no rune poem for Qweorth. It is a Northumbrian Rune.
Qweorth, the fire-twirl, the sacred fire is the rune for today. Friday’s for me tend to be a pretty significant day for Qweorth. Friday is when I make offerings to my spiritual allies and Gods, thanking them for their blessings, and for the challenges they place before me. This typically involves a lot of candles, some for the Gods, some for the ancestors, some for the spirits and wights who I work with. As the fire consumes the wick and candle, it is a way for me to send my gratitude to them, along with the smell of burning incense, and a final candle, a spell for love (it’s Friday, I am not going to ignore the energies that are there). So the sacred fire is everywhere in my home today, with tea lights, offertory candles, smoking incense sticks, and other fires I maybe feeding. A sign that offerings are recognized, being consumed by the flame, are also accepted.

April 22, 2010 – Berkana

Berkana

Berkana is the letter B

Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem (from ragweedforge.com)

The birch bears no fruit; yet without seed it brings forth suckers,
for it is generated from its leaves.Splendid are its branches and gloriously adornedits lofty crown which reaches to the skies.

Ok, honestly I think the runes are just mocking me today. Why? It’s Earth Day. And the Rune is Berkana. Them sons of bitches is hilarious.
With all serious though, Berkana points to growth and nurturing. It just depends upon what is being nurtured. Once can nurture unhealthy, harmful and baneful things, as well as helpful, healing, and benevolent things as well. Whether it is baneful or helpful is up to you and your needs and situation. It reminds me of a show I saw recently, where a character kept a greenhouse with a beautiful garden, that she was much celebrated for. But to the knowledgeable, they realized it was a greenhouse filled with poisonous plants, especially of the hallucinogenic kind like Datura, but also henbane, belladonna, and digitalis. It can work the same within yourself, with your friends, with your employment choices and your environment. What are you really growing for yourself?

April 21, 2010 – Aesc reversed

Aesc reversed

Aesc is the dipthong “ae”

Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem (from ragweedforge.com)

The ash is exceedingly high and precious to men.
With its sturdy trunk it offers a stubborn resistance, though attacked by many a man.

Aesc reversed is the rune for today, the day of Odhinn. To me Aesc is the rune of the upper worlds, and of the primal substance (or essence) from which men (and ultimately all things) are created from. To be drawing upon this primal substance brings ecstasy, like being touched by Divinity, inspiration, but it can also bring madness and escapist obsession. When it is reversed, it can mean the absence of those things. Today however, Aesc reversed to me indicates that this primal substance is being grounded, channeled down into the middle world, to vitalize and rejuvenate the manifested. The inspiration, the primal essence is still there, but it is becoming crystallized as it comes into the middle world. The frenetic and powerful energy is cooled off, so that it can be made useful.

April 20, 2010 – Gebo

Gebo

Gebo is the letter G

Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem (from ragweedforge.com)

Generosity brings credit and honour, which support one’s dignity;
it furnishes help and subsistenceto all broken men who are devoid of aught else.

Gebo, the rune of Gifts, Generosity, and Partnership is the rune for today. Thinking about Gebo causes me to ponder where I need to be generous, and where I might have potential to gain gifts. It also makes me ponder partnership. All types of interactions with people is partnership, a coming together of people where an understanding or contract, whether written, spoken, or assumed, comes into play. Whether it is the social contract of proper business attire and etiquette, to the intimate agreement of people coming together in romance or passion, to the exchange of a worshipper making offerings to the Powers that be, whether for blessings already given, or for gifts that are being sought. It is all of these exchanges that Gebo points to. It is when the contract is broken that problems arise.

I have a lot of partnerships in my life. From how I relate to my progenitors, to my siblings, employers, friends, and potential areas of business engagement, right now partnership seems to be the driving force in my life, and possibly for this year. Through partnership, I can improve, if I honor those commitments, and give and receive ethically with all those I am partnering with.

April 19, 2010 – Gar

Gar

There is no letter equivalent for Gar

There is no rune poem for Gar. It is a Northumbrian rune.

Today’s rune is Gar. It is amusing, because I was thinking about Gar last night, before I fell asleep. I was think about the blank slate quality that Gar seems to express to me. It is empty, and yet full. In the sense that it is Ginnugagap and yet, also Yggdrasil, the void and the World Tree, in it’s emptiness, it can have everything, but by being everything it loses nothing.

Whenever I draw Gar for the daily rune, I notice that I seem to have unusual luck. Unusual, because it is unexpected and often arises out of the most obscure corners. It doesn’t even come out something forgotten, that has been left alone, but really just out of nowhere, something beneficial will happen. It feels like Gar is showing an open door, but where it leads you can never know until you pass through.
There is also a quality to Gar that I can only express as being similar in sense to the qabalistic concept of that which precedes Kether; Ain, Ain Soph, and Ain Soph Aur. It is the forces which precede all of manifestation, that are without any quality that men, Gods or any other being can perceive. It is that quality which makes it blank, the negation of everything, including negation.

April 18, 2010 – Ear reversed

Ear reversed

Ear is the dipthong “ea”

Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem (from ragweedforge.com)

The grave is horrible to every knight,
when the corpse quickly begins to cooland is laid in the bosom of the dark earth.Prosperity declines, happiness passes awayand covenants are broken
While the rune for the week is Ear, the rune for today is Ear reversed. The entropy and decay of Ear takes time, and it’s influence isn’t necessarily always felt strongly or clearly. So, the seeming disintegration that has just begun, is not yet evident for me, although I imagine it will come around. Although my personal experience of Mercury retrograde is different then most others, as my birth occurred during just such an event. Being a Gemini, a sign ruled by Mercury, I feel it’s changes mostly strongly, but generally for me, I tend to live in a Mercury Retrograde world all the time. Often, when this celestial event occurs, it’s like everyone steps into my day to day life. For that reason, I often manage it quite well. Not always, and not totally hundred percent, but often much better then many other people I know and have witnessed. So, for now, things have not yet started to fall apart for me yet. The center is holding, for now.

April 18 – 24, 2010 – Ear

Ear

Ear is the dipthong ea

Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem (from ragweedforge.com)

The grave is horrible to every knight,
when the corpse quickly begins to cooland is laid in the bosom of the dark earth.Prosperity declines, happiness passes awayand covenants are broken
Ear is the rune of week, speaks to what has started today and will continue for the next three weeks. As most occult-minded readers will know, it is the beginning of Mercury Retrograde. During this time, it appears that the planet Mercury is moving backwards in the sky. As Ear represents the forces of death, decay and entropy, it marks the disintegration that occurs under all the things that are influenced by Mercury. While this confusion is happening for most though, to those who are diligent, focused and take the time to review, re-read, and re-examine, life will flow more smoothly. Even as the decline sets in, if you are skilled, you can move with the entropy. At the end of the Retrograde, unresolved or lingering elements might be removed, and allow you begin anew, which is part of the mystery of Mercury Retrograde.

April 17, 2010 – Cweorth

Cweorth

Cweorth is the letter Q

Cweorth does not have a rune poem. It is a Northumbrian rune.

The rune of the fire-twirl, Cweorth, is the sacred and holy fire, from which other flames are light, and offerings are consumed that they can be sent to the Gods. The eternal fire. Everything that is touched by it is transformed, sometimes to benefit, sometimes to be destroyed. But, if you reach in, you might just seize the flame itself, and learn to dance with the fire, and embrace the powers of both, balanced with skill and wisdom.

What does that mean? In a practical way, it takes your passions and energizes them, encouraging action, motion and force. It might also burn the obstacles out of your way, whether those obstacles be external or internal. With those obstacles cleared, new things might grow and mature in their place.
I have also been contemplating some of the primal cosmological forces of the Northern Tradition, and it is interesting that Cweorth, the rune that embodies on of those forces as appeared. The balance and juxtaposition of Fire and Ice, and how that also plays out in other ways is an interesting concept to think about and apply.

April 16, 2010 – Wunjo reversed

Wunjo reversed

Wunjo is the letter W

Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem (from ragweedforge.com)

Bliss he enjoys who knows not suffering, sorrow nor anxiety,
and has prosperity and happiness and a good enough house
And so we have turned, from a day of Bliss to Wunjo reversed. Which doesn’t necessarily mean that everything will go wrong, but it does indicate that there will be anxiety, and perhaps some sorrow and suffering. But then, that is the nature of Joy. It is not a constant thing, but something that comes goes, like any other emotion. You may still have prosperity and a good enough house, but suddenly, that isn’t enough any more. So, what do you do? Manage the best you can. People may vex you, and irritations and annoyances will arise. That is the way of life. It is only the people who have fallen under influence of another who know only bliss, because they no longer have control over their lives, as they are slaves in body and mind.

April 15, 2010 – Feoh

Feoh

Feoh is the letter F

Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem (from ragweedforge.com)

Wealth is a comfort to all men;
yet must every man bestow it freely,if he wish to gain honour in the sight of the Lord
Feoh is the rune of Wealth, Gold and Riches. As it is the wealth rune of portable wealth, it seems that when most people I have met who know anything about runes, it usually involves Feoh and how they can work with it. It does tend to bring money with it wherever it appears or is used. Sometimes that means it needs to be spent, without fear or concern and know that the expenditure will bring benefit. Other times, it will be coming to you. Either way, it is best to have a little financial wisdom when seeing this rune appear.
