Nauthiz is a rune of Fate, which is often described as troubling and cruel, usually because only the unpleasant things are attributed to it. Another meaning to Nauthiz is Necessity, that which needed. In the twisting, twining and weaving of fate, both benevolent and malevolent things are present. Yet in responding to each one, in it’s own way, it can bring help and salvation. Today is more about help and salvation. The trials faced have been somewhat prepared for, and while some pain will be present, the resolution will come quickly.

Nauthiz shows that trouble is coming, and that necessities need to be met. However, in this case, Necessity is taking it’s proverbial role as the mother of invention. Acknowledge your troubles, and take time to consider them and work with them. Whatever it is, it will open up to you, and show you new possibilities and that will resolve them.

Today’s rune of Nauthiz is showing that there is a need to focus on how one is nourishing, sustaining and growing to yourself and others. Maybe you need to spend some time healing, or contemplation on what really feeds you and nourishes you instead of what you can just fill yourself with, whether that be food, actions, information and other things. Today is definitely an opportunity to heed the trouble and find the source of help and salvation.

Nauthiz, the rune of need, necessity and troubles is the rune for today. It is a call to awareness, to be aware of what is pressing upon you, or where you might look and see what in your life is lacking. Focusing on that now, might help prevent other problems or difficulties later.

Often time when Nauthiz comes up in a reading, the necessity is unclear. At that time, you should expand the rune with additional runes to clarify what is being indicated. Today, the clarifying rune was Jera, year and harvest. The need that is calling is one about tending to those things that need time and investment to come to fruition. Another meaning I add to Jera is patience. Not everything can come in a hurry, even if that is what you want. Sometimes, you just have to be patient. Work what can be worked, labor where you need to labor and have things ready so that when it does come, it’s effects can be lasting and enduring

You should all be familiar with this rune. It seems to come up a lot lately, I think. Need. Necessity. The troubles of things that must be done, that can be challenging, and oppressive, yet can bring great help and succor when it is acted upon. An interesting sign for Superbowl Sunday.

Today’s need was pointed to me as being of spiritual necessity. Things that must be done because spirit (your spirit, an allied spirit, Spirit (with a capital S) needs it. For me, that meant making sure I did my daily work of meditation, galdr practice, and on Fridays, offerings. I feel better now. You will too. You might find that spirit demands other things throughout the day.

Nauthiz or Nyth translates as Need. As the rune poem shows, it is a difficult rune, but can also bring great benefit if heeded in time. Often this rune is connected the powers that govern fate, expressed in the Northern tradition as the Norns, but they can also be known as the Wyrd Sisters.

While other runes also can relate to those mysterious forces which seem to shape the lives of men and gods, often known as Fate, Destiny, Chance and of course Free Will, Of those runes Nauthiz belongs with Fate and Destiny. As its name literally means Need, it points to those things that Need to be. Sometimes that needed event is easy and pleasurable, other times it can be challenging and painful. Both can bring their own lessons and shape people for good or ill.
However, the writ of Need is large, and not all things fall under its purvey. To blame everything on Fate is not what is meant or needed, as often times those fated things are acted upon, even without even realizing it.
