H is for Herbs and spices

Spices_22078028

I love herbs. My mom is a gardener and growing up with a garden with plants growing and herbs all around has always been interesting to me, although spading and working the soil was not my favorite thing as a kid. When I discovered the magic of herbs, I jumped at it, and one of my first entries in my magical workbook was several pages about herb lore. Although it would be a while before I really started doing a lot with herbs, when I started cooking regularly, they also become a favorite way to give flavor, depth and interest to dishes.

Herbs (which for me cover everything like seeds, barks, roots, petals, flowers, stamens and leaves) have a multitude of means of putting them to work in practical sorcery While I don’t always think about magical relationships with herbs while cooking, sometimes the symbolism I find can be quite potent. An apple pie with cinnamon or clove can be clever and tasty way to deliver a love spell. A good marinara sauce seasoned with basil, rosemary and sage can help to promote peace and blessings among the inhabitants of a home. Make a protection soup with white mustard, black pepper and that ubiquitous pinch of salt, which can both be magical and flavorful. A cup of chamomile tea can be soothing and relaxing, but also help bring luck, especially with money.

Of course, there are more ritualized methods of working with herbs as well, that are not so subtle. Making a herbal blend which you then boil or steep in hot water to make a magical bath. For cleansing I have a preference for sage (the garden variety) hyssop and eucalyptus leaves. For love, Rose petals, lavender buds, and some rosemary make for a gentle love drawing bath that smells quite green and floral. For something a bit more spicy, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom made into a strong tea and then bathed in can also bring a bit for physical enjoyment. You can also just simmer the above spices, or a pumpkin spice blend in a pot of water to get the scent to fill the home before an amour comes over to visit. Similarly a bath in cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice can help to draw wealth and good fortune. You can also bath in chamomile tea, which creates a bath of golden water, a very striking image of as you are bathing in gold.

While not as commonly used by many people, powders are a good way to apply magic. A practice that comes mainly from African American folk traditions, it is often overlooked by people outside of tha tradition, except for well known powders like Hotfoot Powder or Goofer Dust, two powders used to curse people, either to drive them away, or to potentially kill them. You can also use simple powdered herbs for their effects. Putting a pinch of ground black pepper and then a pinch of salt in your shoes can help to protect you from harm, shielding you from curses that have been laid down where you walk. The first time I did this, I almost jumped when I put my shoes on, because I immediately felt this surge of power go through, as though some residual negative energy have been cast out from me. Of course, there are other powdered herbs. You should take a pink of powdered cinnamon and lay it down underneath your door mat, to bring wealth to your home, a good practice if you also have a home business. Laying powdered herbs down that relate to your intention in the 4 corners of your home or property is a good way to reinforce magic performed on that area to help establish protection, blessings, or good fortune in the home or property. You can also use powdered herbs in rituals, using them to lay down symbols that connect to the herbs powers, which are serve to further reinforce your intention and focus. The most recognized one would be a circle of protective herbs, perhaps mixed together, which then marks a boundary for a ring of candles that surround a single candle, used in a spell for protection. When the candles have all burned out, collect the powder again, and carry it with you for protection, or sprinkle it around your home or the place to be protected.

There is a multitude of ways of using herbs, and I hope I have laid out some less commented upon methods here to inspire your imagination when working with herbs in magic.

Prayers and Psalms

Lately, I have been working a lot with prayer and praying. One of the main ways that I have been working with is by reading psalms on a daily basis. I have been exploring Psalms that can be read for different purposes, such as money, love, and luck, but also psalms that can be read and prayed every day for blessings and spiritual guidance and favor.

The book that has been helping me with this is Secrets of the Psalms by Godfrey Selig. It describes practical spiritual workings with the psalms, as well as identifying which psalms that can be worked with from Jewish spiritual practices.

To help me with this, I made a list of Psalms grouped by the purpose identifed by Mr. Selig. I figured I would share this list with my blog

Mirror Box Spell for Protection and Empowerment

This was a spell I did for client, who was under continuous spiritual attack for being gay.

The things that you will need are:

A box
Four mirrors
Modeling clay
Paint (white and red)
White vigil candle

Protection incense
Protection Oil

Gay Power Oil
Blessings Oil
A personal concern

Granulated Sugar
High John root pieces
Queen Elizabeth root pieces
Solomon seal root pieces
Calamus Root Pieces
Black Sampson root pieces
Safflower
Lavender

The firs step is preparing the box. Any box will do. In the photos given, the box I used was a photo box that can turn around. Paint the box white from top to bottom and the inside. White is a color of protection and spiritual power. Once the box has dried; paint on the outside, on each side of the box a symbol of protection. The symbol pictured is taken from Icelandic magic and is the Sign of Solomon, but any protection symbol will do. The symbol should be painted in red. Using the red paint, paint a symbol of power, strength or mastery on the inside of the box, on each inside wall. For my client, I painted the lower case greek Lambda, a symbol for the Gay Rights. Once the paint has dried, fix the four mirrors over the symbols on the outside of the box, so they are reflecting outward. The mirrors help to strengthen the protection, but reflecting the harmful forces away. With the box I used, I slid the mirrors into the picture frames.

Once that is completed, take the modeling clay, and shape it into a figure that resembles the person being protected. Once the figure is shaped, take a pin and carve into the chest of the figurine the name of the client. Once that is completed, baptize the figurine saying “I name you (client’s name), (Client’s Name) you are to me. At this point, integrate in the personal concern of the client. The concern I had was a piece of paper, with the client’s name written on it seven times, by the client himself. I wrapped the paper around the doll, and then proceeded to oil the doll with the Gay Power oil, stroking the oil towards me, to draw power, heal, and strengthen him. I then placed the figurine in the box. Mixing together the sugar and herbs, I prayed over them, asking for strength, wholeness, power and mastery for the client. Once it was thoroughly mixed, I poured the combination over the figurine, surrounding him with sweetness and power. I then sealed the box.

On the outside, I anointed the corners and top and bottom of the box with protection oil, and smoked the box in protection incense, praying for the client to be protected from harmful influences, and that the mirrors reflect the harm back up on the sources, causing them to see only what they wanted to see. As I did this, I turned the box on its pedestal, so the mirrors reflected all the directions. I then took the white vigil candle; fixed it with protection, gay power, and blessings oil, praying for the client to be protected, and that blessings and power fill the client.

Magic for Health

Many times, the problems we experience are related to our health, and as many can attest, if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.

Everyone experiences the occasional ache and pain, or perhaps you are going through a cold or minor flu. There is also stress in our lifes, which can weaken our bodies natural defenses, or when allergies just rise from a sudden exposure or a change local climate conditions.

In all of these things, one of the first steps when dealing with health, is being aware of what your healthy state is. If you have a doctor, having a check up, get an idea of what your regular state of health is, and keep that in mind. That way, when that state starts to decline, you can recognize the symptoms early on, instead of feeling caught off guard when something happens. The doctor can also make recommendations for physical methods that can help you feel better or improve your health in specific or general ways. You should always visit your healthcare professional with questions, so studying up on things that you may be interested in, is also always helpful.

Another great starting point for health, is to take up a meditation practice. Now, I am suggesting that you go out and join a transcendental meditation group, or get a guru, or anthing of the sort. Any practice where you can give your mind a 5 second break, relax, and just sort of empty of itself of all the stresses, tensions, worries for a few minutes every day is all you need. While meditation is the popular word for it, some other names are silent prayer, contemplation, or centering prayer. There is a multitude of techniques, and all of them can produce similar results, you just need to find the one that works best for you. One that I am fond of, is taking the time each day, usually during the morning before you leave for work, and reading or reciting prayers or psalms. Giving yourself 5 minutes each morning to just pray and focus your being on God, while offering up your cares and worries, and allowing his grace to enter into your life. There are many prayers out there, and a quite a few psalms, so just pick one, and try it and keep trying until you find one, or several, that you like.

When a specific health problem arises, my favorite means of helping to bring healing and resolution is a very simple candle burning spell. Taking a white candle, cleansing it with some salt dissolved in clean water, and dress the candle with a blessing oil, holy oil, or healing oil. Even a common kitchen oil, like olive or vegetable oil that you have prayed over will do. Taking a pin or needle, write your petition on the candle. For example, if you strained your ankle you would write “heal my ankle.”. Write it three times into the candle. Dress the candle with the oil, repeating your petition as you do so. Once the candle is dressed, put it into a candle holder. Light the candle, and pray silently for a minute, and repeat your petition again, and then go about the rest of your day. You might rest, take some other physical actions to help in easing discomfort and bring about healing. This simple spell can be repeated as often as desired until satisfaction is achieved. A way to make the spell more focused, especially if you are dealing with a specific malady, is to use some thing that has some of your essence in it. If a cold or flu, use a used tissue underneath the candle. One time, I used this with some blood and saliva soaked cotton from getting a filling, which helped my mouth heal quickly, and I have no had any problems related to my teeth since that time.

One herb that I have found useful in all kinds of healing, is a very popular and well known herb. High John the Conqueror. For healing? What? You don’t say? I do. Many times, when I have used High John when dealing with a physical problems, especially related to muscles or joints, High John seems to be a great aid in facilitating the healing process. It doesn’t seem to be a normal association, but I see it as coming from the strength and power that High John confers. In giving strength and power to your body, it helps make you strong, physically and spiritually. Combined with Sampson Root and Angelica, it gives a boost to ones body, health and well being that really works wonders. I often use them in a condition oil, and rub a dab of the oil on the sore muscle or damaged joint, or dab small amounts on my whole body, including the soles of my feet and the crown of my head, if I am seeking to increase or strengthen my health, especially during those times of the year when people feel that it is “cold season.”

Another practice is taking a cleansing bath, maybe once a week or once a month. Like the simple one I described earlier, the cleansing bath can remove the spiritual detritus we pick up and carry with us from wherever we go. Also, if you can soak in a bath tub, it’s a great time to pray and meditate, silently or vocally and allow yourself another chance to relax.

Cleanse and Refresh with Water

Water has a wonderful spiritual power all it’s own. While it often plays a backdrop to many spiritual practices itself, water can be used directly in it’s own way.

One of the main qualities of water that is recognized is that it is cooling. As many people take the opportunity to enjoy a pool or the beach on a hot day, or just seek out cool water to drink when feeling hot from exertion, so that same quality can be used in spiritual work.

A simple way to use the cooling power of water is to fill a glass or bowl with clean water. Tap water is sufficient, but you might find that bottled spring water or water collected from a natural source, like a nearby lake, river, ocean is more effective. Pray over the water to fill it and emphasize the use. Some examples from Psalms that might be effective might be Psalm 65:9 “You visit the earth and water it, You greatly enrich it, The river of God is full of Water.” or Psalm 72:6 “He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing, Like showers that water the earth.” or Psalm 104:13 “He waters the hills from his upper chambers. The earth is satisfied with the fruit of his works.” After praying, take the water starting in the back of your home, sprinkle it around you. If you have a device to sprinkle with, use that, but just using your fingers after dipping them in the water is sufficient. Sprinkle the water until you have sprinkled every room of your home. This helps to cool and refresh the home, a simple way to cleanse and bless it, and an excellent addition to any house cleansing, especially after an intense or hot situation, like an argument.

This water can also be used to cool and refresh yourself, just pouring the cool water over yourself, or sprinkling it on yourself. The sprinkle some before you, behind you, and to your right and left, essentially cooling and refreshing in a five-spot around you to cool the paths you might walk or go.

You might be familiar with the folk magic of setting a glass of water near you as you sleep. No, it’s not for drinking, but has often been used as a way to bring restful sleep, as it keeps away nightmares and spiritual forces that might be troubling you, at least on a basic level. I find that adding a pinch of salt, and praying over it seems to give better results if you find that you are prone to nightmares or very sensitive to spiritual forces. When you wake up in the morning, it should be disposed of, either by throwing out the front door of your home (or apartment building) or flushing it down the toilet.

This same glass of water can also be set in a room for a day, as it will also produce a calming influence to spiritual forces and disturbances. One method of making this stronger is to add some camphor to that glass, a crystalline substance often sold in cubes, which has been used for cleansing and purification as well. Camphor also has a cool sharp scent and works well with water for this purpose.

Praying over water before you drink it, is also a very gentle way to help do a regular personal cleansing. Water is used to help the body remove waste that is made from regular functions, so spiritual empowered water can help to remove spiritual debris from within, which can be very useful following a period of intense spiritual work, or as part of spiritual cleansing regime.

A simple spiritual cleansing bath

When I am feeling down on my luck, and the world has seemed to turn against me, one of my favorite things to rectify the situation is to perform a cleansing bath for myself. This simple bath is one I use for myself, and sometimes I just use it because I find that it is highly relaxing, refreshing and recharging.

For the cleansing bath you will need these things:

1 cup of Salt (table salt, sea salt, kosher salt, rock salt, pink Himalayan salt, celtic sea salt whatever)
1 cup of Epsom salts (easily found at the local drugstore)
1 Laundry Blueing (Either liquid, or in a form of a square or ball)
A bowl (large enough to hold 2 cups of salt)

Take the ingredients, and mix them all together in a bowl. If you are using liquid blueing, you will only need a single use (about a table spoon), and if you using a square or ball, just press it down into the salt combination at the end.

In a clean tub, draw up a bath, like you would any other time. If you desire, you can pray over the water as it fills the tub. Once the bath is drawn, pour in the mixture of salts and laundry blueing, and mix it around to help the salt dissolve. Put the bowl next to the tub and get inside. Using the bowl, or your hands, scoop up some of the water and pour down over your head, and continue doing this, pouring the water down, over your body. If you are sitting in the tub, rub your legs with your hands in the water, starting at your thighs and moving down towards your feet. As your bathe, pray that harmful influences are removed, and that good things come into your life. I often find that using Psalms is helpful in this regard. The idea is that you are washing and cleaning away all the uwanted and harmful influences that maybe present. You can stay in the tub for as long as you want, letting the blue salty water neutralize the influences. When you are finished, take the bowl and scoop up some of the water, and set it aside. Stop out and let the tub drain. Allow yourself to air dry, put on some clean fresh clothes, and take the bowl of water, and throw towards a tree outside, towards the rising sun.

I find this bath effective for a few reasons. Salt is well known as a all around beneficial mineral, and is used often in cleansing and purification, as it neutralizes and blocks harmful and unwanted influences. Blue is a spiritual color, long associated with protection, benevolent influences, Laundry blueing was the method of keeping white clothing white before the mass production of bleach, and as white is the benevolent and spiritual color, the laundry blueing also helps to fill you with benevolence and spiritual power.
